For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Jaguar XJ have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The BMW 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer pretensioners for the rear seat belts.

The XJ’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Jaguar XJ are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

To help make backing safer, the XJ’s cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the XJ and the 5 Series Sedan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, front parking sensors, available collision warning systems and around view monitors.

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the XJ for 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW pays for maintenance for the 5 Series Sedan (5/60,000 vs. 4/50,000).

For better traction, the XJ has larger standard tires than the 5 Series Sedan (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 225/55R17). The XJR’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 5 Series Sedan (F:265/35R20 & R:295/30R20 vs. F:245/40R19 & R:275/35R19).

The XJ’s standard 245/45R19 front and 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 528i Sedan’s standard 55 series tires. The XJR’s 265/35R20 front and 295/30R20 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the 5 Series Sedan’s optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XJ has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the 528i Sedan. The XJ’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the 5 Series Sedan.

The XJ has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the 5 Series Sedan, it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

The rear suspension of the XJ uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the 5 Series Sedan, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The XJ has a standard automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XJ’s wheelbase is 2.5 inches longer than on the 5 Series Sedan (119.4 inches vs. 116.9 inches). The XJL’s wheelbase is 7.4 inches longer than on the 5 Series Sedan (124.3 inches vs. 116.9 inches).

The XJ Supercharged handles at .87 G’s, while the 528i Sedan pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The XJL Supercharged goes through Road & Track’s slalom 1.5 MPH faster than the 528i Sedan (65.9 vs. 64.4 MPH).

The XJ has .1 inches more front legroom, 3.7 inches more rear legroom and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the 5 Series Sedan.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the XJ L’s available rear seats recline. The 5 Series Sedan’s rear seats don’t recline.

The XJ has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Standard air conditioned seats in front and rear seats keep the XJ’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in Summer. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer air conditioned seats in the rear.

The XJ has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold Winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the 5 Series Sedan.
