The X3’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Cayenne doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The X3 has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To help make backing safer, the X3’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the X3 and the Cayenne have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The X3 is 5.2 inches shorter than the Cayenne, making the X3 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the BMW X3 amounts to more than styling. The X3 offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .29 to .33 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the Cayenne (.35 to .36) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the X3 get better fuel mileage.

If the windows are left open on the X3 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote.
