Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The 7 Series offers an optional backup collision prevention system which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The S-Class doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To help make backing safer, the 7 Series’ optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The S-Class doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the 7 Series and the S-Class have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, night vision systems, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The Alpina B7 xDrive’s optional 255/35R21 front and 295/30R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S-Class’ optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Alpina B7 xDrive offers optional 21-inch wheels. The S-Class’ largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the 7 Series can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. Run-flat tires aren’t available on some tire packages on the S-Class.

The 7 Series offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The S-Class doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 7 Series’ wheelbase is 1.8 inches longer than on the S-Class (126.4 inches vs. 124.6 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the 7 Series is .4 inches wider in the front and 1.8 inches wider in the rear than on the S-Class.

The Alpina B7 xDrive handles at .97 G’s, while the S550e pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The 750i xDrive executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the S550 (25.4 seconds @ .75 average G’s vs. 26.5 seconds @ .7 average G’s).

The BMW 7 Series may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 150 to 450 pounds less than the Mercedes S-Class.

The design of the BMW 7 Series amounts to more than styling. The 7 Series has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the S-Class (.27 to .28) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the 7 Series get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the 7 Series uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The S-Class doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the 750i xDrive is quieter than the S550:

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the 7 Series is less expensive to operate than the S-Class because it costs $432 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the 7 Series than the S-Class, including $221 less for a water pump, $734 less for an alternator, $153 less for front brake pads, $94 less for a starter and $564 less for front struts.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the BMW 7 Series will be $19348 to $120565 less than for the Mercedes S-Class.
