Safety Comparison

The S6’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Ghibli doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The S6 offers optional Pre Sense Plus, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Ghibli doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The S6 has a standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the S6. But it costs extra on the Ghibli.

An active infrared night vision system optional on the S6 Prestige helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera and near-infrared lights to detect heat, the system then projects the image on the windshield, near the driver’s line of sight. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The S6’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The S6 offers an optional Top and Corner View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Ghibli only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the S6 and the Ghibli have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the S6 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2016, a rating granted to only 84 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Ghibli has not been tested, yet.

Warranty Comparison

The S6’s corrosion warranty is 8 years and unlimited miles longer than the Ghibli’s (12/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

There are almost 5 times as many Audi dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the S6’s warranty.

Engine Comparison

The S6’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 105 more horsepower (450 vs. 345) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (406 vs. 369) than the Ghibli’s standard 3.0 turbo V6. The S6’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 46 more horsepower (450 vs. 404) than the Ghibli S’ standard 3.0 turbo V6.

As tested in Motor Trend the Audi S6 is faster than the Ghibli S:

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the S6 gets better fuel mileage than the Ghibli S Q4 (18 city/27 hwy vs. 16 city/24 hwy).

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the S6’s fuel efficiency. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

For better stopping power the S6’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Ghibli:

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the S6 has larger tires than the Ghibli (255/40R19 vs. 245/45R19). The S6’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Ghibli (255/40R19 vs. 245/40R20).

The S6’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Ghibli’s standard 45 series front tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The front and rear suspension of the S6 uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Ghibli, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The S6 has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The S6’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The S6 handles at .92 G’s, while the Ghibli S Q4 pulls only .91 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The S6 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Ghibli S Q4 (24.9 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 25.5 seconds @ .8 average G’s).

Chassis Comparison

The design of the Audi S6 amounts to more than styling. The S6 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the Ghibli (.31) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the S6 get better fuel mileage.

The S6 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Ghibli doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the S6 is quieter than the Ghibli S Q4:

40 dB

56 dB

Passenger Space Comparison

The S6 has 3.6 inches more front legroom and 4.2 inches more rear legroom than the Ghibli.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

With its sedan body style, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the S6 offers cargo security. The Ghibli’s non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

A standard locking glovebox keeps your small valuables safer in the S6. The Ghibli doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics Comparison

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional at extra cost in the Ghibli, the S6 offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle and climate settings and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The S6 offers an optional heads-up display which projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the S6 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the Ghibli.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the S6 offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Ghibli doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Standard Audi Connect for the S6 allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including finding fuel prices at nearby service stations, searching the internet and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The Ghibli doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

Recommendations Comparison

The S6 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 5 of the last 17 years. The Ghibli has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.
