Safety Comparison

Both the A6 and TLX have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The A6 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The TLX’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The A6 has a standard Audi Backguard System, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Audi Backguard System moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The TLX doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The A6 has a standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The TLX doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

An active infrared night vision system optional on the A6 Prestige helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera and near-infrared lights to detect heat, the system then projects the image on the windshield, near the driver’s line of sight. The TLX doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The A6 offers an optional Top and Corner View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The TLX only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the A6 and the TLX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems and blind spot warning systems.

A significantly tougher test than their original offset frontal crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH small overlap frontal offset crash tests. In this test, where only 25% of the total width of the vehicle is struck, results indicate that the Audi A6 is safer than the TLX:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Audi A6 is safer than the Acura TLX:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the A6 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 103 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The TLX was not even a “Top Pick” for 2016.

Warranty Comparison

The A6’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the TLX’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Reliability Comparison

The camshafts in the A6’s engine are driven by a hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs. The TLX 3.5 SOHC V6’s camshafts are driven by a rubber belt that needs periodic replacement. If the TLX’s cam drive belt breaks the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

The battery on the A6 is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the A6’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The TLX’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without their vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports predicts that the Audi A6’s reliability will be 120% better than the TLX and the Audi A6 2.0T will be 153% better than the TLX.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 14th in initial quality. With 12 more problems per 100 vehicles, Acura is ranked 24th.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the A6 2.0T Quattro 8-speed Auto gets better city fuel mileage than the TLX SH-AWD V6 (22 city/31 hwy vs. 21 city/31 hwy).

Regardless of its engine, the A6’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) Acura only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the TLX V6 SH-AWD.

The A6 has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the TLX (19.8 vs. 17.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the A6 has larger standard tires than the TLX (245/45R18 vs. 225/55R17). The A6’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the TLX (255/40R19 vs. 225/55R17).

The A6’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the TLX’s standard 55 series tires. The A6’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile than the TLX V-6’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the A6 has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the TLX. The A6’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels on the TLX V-6.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the A6’s wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than on the TLX (114.6 inches vs. 109.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the A6 is 1.3 inches wider in the front and .6 inches wider in the rear than on the TLX.

The A6’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (53.5% to 46.5%) than the TLX’s (60% to 40%). This gives the A6 more stable handling and braking.

The A6 3.0T Quattro handles at .95 G’s, while the TLX V-6 SH-AWD pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The A6 3.0T Quattro executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.9 seconds quicker than the TLX (25.1 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 27 seconds @ .74 average G’s).

Passenger Space Comparison

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the A6 is rated a Mid-size car by the EPA, while the TLX is rated a Compact.

The A6 has 3.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the TLX (97.2 vs. 93.3).

The A6 has 1.1 inches more rear headroom, 2.9 inches more rear legroom and .9 inches more rear shoulder room than the TLX.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The A6 has a larger trunk than the TLX (14.1 vs. 13.2 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults or children, the A6 Prestige has a standard power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or optionally by just holding your hand near the emblem on the trunk, completely leaving your hands free. The TLX doesn’t offer a power trunk.

Ergonomics Comparison

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the TLX, the A6 Prestige offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle and climate settings and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The A6 Prestige has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The TLX doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The power windows standard on both the A6 and the TLX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the A6 is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The TLX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The A6’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The TLX’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the A6 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The TLX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the A6 detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The TLX doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the A6 Prestige has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The TLX doesn’t offer cornering lights. The A6 Prestige also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the A6 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The TLX doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

Both the A6 and the TLX have standard heated front seats. The A6 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the TLX.

On extremely cold Winter days, the A6’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The TLX doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the A6 owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the A6 with a number “5” insurance rate while the TLX is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the A6 is less expensive to operate than the TLX because typical repairs cost much less on the A6 than the TLX, including $394 less for a power steering pump.
