Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Maserati Ghibli are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

To help make backing safer, the Ghibli’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The 6 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Ghibli and the 6 Series Gran Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

The Ghibli has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the 6 Series Gran Coupe’s standard fuel tank (21.1 vs. 18.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Ghibli has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The 6 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The Ghibli stops much shorter than the 6 Series Gran Coupe:

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction and acceleration, the Ghibli has larger standard rear tires than the 6 Series Gran Coupe (275/40R19 vs. 245/45R18).

The Ghibli’s standard 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 640i Gran Coupe’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the 640i Gran Coupe. The Ghibli’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the 6 Series Gran Coupe.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ghibli’s wheelbase is 1.3 inches longer than on the 6 Series Gran Coupe (118 inches vs. 116.7 inches).

The Ghibli S Q4 handles at .91 G’s, while the 640i Gran Coupe pulls only .89 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Ghibli’s turning circle is .8 feet tighter than the 6 Series Gran Coupe’s (38.4 feet vs. 39.2 feet). The Ghibli’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the M6 Gran Coupe’s (38.4 feet vs. 41 feet).

Passenger Space Comparison

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the Ghibli is rated a Large car by the EPA, while the 6 Series Gran Coupe is rated a Compact.

The Ghibli has 11 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 6 Series Gran Coupe (108 vs. 97).

The Ghibli has 1.1 inches more front shoulder room, 1.8 inches more rear headroom and 1.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the 6 Series Gran Coupe.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Ghibli has a much larger trunk than the 6 Series Gran Coupe with its rear seat up (17.6 vs. 12 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Ghibli’s trunk can be opened just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Ghibli also offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by kicking your foot under the back bumper. The 6 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Ghibli offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 6 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Ghibli’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The 6 Series Gran Coupe does not have an oil pressure gauge.

Keyless Entry and Go standard on the Ghibli allows you to unlock the driver’s door, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe’s Comfort Access doesn’t unlock the trunk.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Ghibli to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The 6 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.
