Safety Comparison

Both the Range Rover and GL-Class have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The GL-Class’ child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To help make backing safer, the Range Rover’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The GL-Class doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Range Rover and the GL-Class have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Warranty Comparison

The Range Rover’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the GL-Class’ (6/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

Engine Comparison

The Range Rover’s 3.0 turbo V6 diesel produces 14 more horsepower (254 vs. 240) than the GL-Class’ 3.0 turbo V6 diesel.

Regardless of its engine, the Range Rover’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) Mercedes only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the GL-Class GL450/GL63 AMG.

The Range Rover has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the GL-Class (27.7 vs. 26.4 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover offers optional 22-inch wheels. The GL-Class’ largest wheels are only 21-inches.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover is 1.1 inches wider in the front and .1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the GL-Class.

The Range Rover Supercharged handles at .75 G’s, while the GL450 pulls only .74 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Range Rover Supercharged executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2 seconds quicker than the GL350 BlueTEC (26.7 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 28.7 seconds @ .54 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the GL-Class’ (39.7 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover has a greater minimum ground clearance than the GL-Class (11.6 vs. 10.9 inches), allowing the Range Rover to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis Comparison

The Land Rover Range Rover may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 550 pounds less than the Mercedes GL-Class.

The Range Rover is 4.8 inches shorter than the GL350 BlueTEC/GL450, making the Range Rover easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .35 to .36 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the GL-Class (.369 to .377). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Range Rover Diesel uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The GL-Class doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Range Rover SVAutobiography’s optional sliding cargo floor makes loading and unloading cargo easier and safer. The GL-Class doesn’t offer a sliding load floor.

The Range Rover’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The GL-Class’ rear cargo window doesn’t open.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover’s cargo door can be opened and closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The GL-Class doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its cargo door, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Range Rover has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GL-Class doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Range Rover’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the GL-Class.

The Range Rover offers an optional heads-up display which projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The GL-Class doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover has a standard rear speed-sensitive intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GL-Class only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Range Rover HSE/Supercharged/Autobiography has standard front air conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The GL-Class doesn’t offer air conditioned seats for the second row.

The Range Rover has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold Winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the GL-Class.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Range Rover is less expensive to operate than the GL-Class because it costs $477 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Range Rover than the GL-Class, including $488 less for a water pump, $260 less for an alternator, $78 less for front brake pads and $95 less for a starter.

Recommendations Comparison

Truck Trend performed a comparison test in its September 2013 issue and the Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged won out over the Mercedes GL63 AMG.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover second among large premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The GL-Class isn’t in the top three.
