For better protection of the passenger compartment, the LR4 uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The GX460 uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the LR4 and the GX460 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available collision warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The camshafts in the LR4’s engine are driven by a hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs. The GX460’s camshafts are driven by a rubber belt that needs periodic replacement. If the GX460’s cam drive belt breaks the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the LR4’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The GX460 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The LR4’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GX460’s standard 60 series tires. The LR4’s optional tires have a lower 50 series profile than the GX460’s 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the LR4 has standard 19-inch wheels. Only 18-inch wheels are available on the GX460. The LR4 offers optional 20-inch wheels.

For superior ride and handling, the Land Rover LR4 has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Lexus GX460 has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The front and rear suspension of the LR4 uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the GX460, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the LR4’s wheelbase is 3.8 inches longer than on the GX460 (113.6 inches vs. 109.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the LR4 is .8 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than on the GX460.

Unibody construction makes the LR4’s chassis much stiffer, which contributes to better handling, and enables softer springs to be used for a better ride. Unibody construction’s stiffness also contributes to better durability and less body squeaks and rattles. The GX460 doesn’t use unibody construction, but a body-on-frame design.

If the windows are left down on the LR4 the driver can raise them all using the keyless remote; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the GX460 can only raise the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The LR4’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The GX460’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the LR4 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The GX460 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The LR4’s power mirror controls are mounted on the door for easy access. The GX460’s power mirror controls are on the dash, hidden behind the steering wheel, where they are awkward to manipulate.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its July 2010 issue and the Land Rover LR4 HSE won out over the Lexus GX460.

The LR4 was selected by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine as their 2011 4x4 of the Year. The GX was 4x4 of the Year in 2003.
