Both the XF and 5 Series Sedan have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The XF has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The 5 Series Sedan’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.
To help make backing safer, the XF’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.
Both the XF and the 5 Series Sedan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, front parking sensors, available all-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.
The XF comes with a full 5-year/60,000 mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24 hour roadside assistance. The 5 Series Sedan’s 4-year/50,000 mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 10,000 miles sooner.
Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the XF for 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW pays for maintenance for the 5 Series Sedan (5/60,000 vs. 4/50,000).
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jaguar vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jaguar third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 6th.

The XF Premium’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 528i Sedan’s standard 55 series tires. The XF’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile than the 5 Series Sedan’s optional 40 series front tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XF Premium has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the 528i Sedan. The XF’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the 5 Series Sedan.
The XF has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the 5 Series Sedan, it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

The design of the Jaguar XF amounts to more than styling. The XF has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .26 Cd. That is lower than the 5 Series Sedan (.27 to .29) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the XF get better fuel mileage.

The XF has a much larger trunk than the 5 Series Sedan (19.1 vs. 14 cubic feet).

This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 5 Series Sedan doesn’t offer a remote starting system.
The XF was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” in 2009. The 5 Series Sedan has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.
The XF was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” for 2 of the last 7 years. The 5 Series Sedan has never been an “All Star.”
