Safety Comparison

To help make backing safer, the Challenger’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The M4 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Challenger and the M4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, available collision warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rearview cameras.

Warranty Comparison

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Challenger 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the M4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the M4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 8 times as many Dodge dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Challenger’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

The M4’s redline is at 7600 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The Challenger has a 5800 to 6400 RPM redline.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Challenger first among midsize sporty cars in their 2015 Initial Quality Study. The M4 isn’t in the top three in its category.

Engine Comparison

The Challenger Scat Pack/SRT 392 HEMI’s standard 6.4 V8 produces 60 more horsepower (485 vs. 425) and 69 lbs.-ft. more torque (475 vs. 406) than the M4’s 3.0 turbo 6 cyl. The Challenger SRT Hellcat’s standard 6.2 supercharged V8 produces 282 more horsepower (707 vs. 425) and 244 lbs.-ft. more torque (650 vs. 406) than the M4’s 3.0 turbo 6 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Challenger 5.7/6.4 V8 Auto’s fuel efficiency. The M4 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The Challenger has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the M4 (18.5 vs. 15.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Challenger SRT’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the M4 (275/40R20 vs. 255/40R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Challenger offers optional 20-inch wheels. The M4’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Challenger’s wheelbase is 5.5 inches longer than on the M4 (116.2 inches vs. 110.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Challenger is 1.4 inches wider in the front and .4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the M4.

For better maneuverability, the Challenger SXT/R/T’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the M4’s (37.4 feet vs. 40 feet). The Challenger Scat Pack’s turning circle is 1.2 feet tighter than the M4’s (38.8 feet vs. 40 feet).

Chassis Comparison

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Challenger has liquid-filled engine mounts. The liquid helps further dampen engine harshness. The M4 uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Challenger Scat Pack is quieter than the M4 Coupe (85 vs. 87 dB).

Passenger Space Comparison

The Challenger has standard seating for 5 passengers; the M4 can only carry 4.

The Challenger has 3.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the M4 Coupe (93.7 vs. 90).

The Challenger has .8 inches more front shoulder room and 1 inch more rear headroom than the M4 Coupe.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Challenger has a much larger trunk than the M4 Coupe (16.2 vs. 11 cubic feet).

Ergonomics Comparison

The Challenger Automatic offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The M4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Challenger’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The M4 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Challenger has standard extendable sun visors. The M4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air conditioned seats in the Challenger keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The M4 doesn’t offer air conditioned seats.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Challenger offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The M4 doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Challenger owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Challenger will cost $905 to $8795 less than the M4 over a five-year period.

Intellichoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Dodge Challenger will be $8836 to $30559 less than for the BMW M4.

Recommendations Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Challenger first among midsize sporty cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The M4 isn’t in the top three.

 The Challenger is ranked first in its class and received the 2015 “Total Quality Award.” The M4 is not ranked.
