Safety Comparison

The M4 offers optional City Collision Mitigation, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Corvette doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The M4’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Corvette doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The M4 offers an optional Side and Top View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Corvette only offers a rear monitor.

The M4’s optional blind spot warning system uses digital cameras monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Corvette doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

Both the M4 and the Corvette have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and daytime running lights.

Warranty Comparison

The M4 comes with a full 4 year/50,000 mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24 hour roadside assistance. The Corvette’s 3 year/36,000 mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 14,000 miles sooner.

The M4’s corrosion warranty is 6 years and unlimited miles longer than the Corvette’s (12/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the M4 for 2 years and 26000 miles longer than Chevrolet pays for maintenance for the Corvette (4/50,000 vs. 2/24,000).

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the M4 has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the engines in the Corvette.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 6th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 2 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked 7th.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the M4’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Corvette doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

For better traction, the M4 has larger front tires than the Corvette (255/40R18 vs. 245/40R18).

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The front and rear suspension of the M4 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the Corvette, which uses transverse leafs springs. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the M4’s wheelbase is 4 inches longer than on the Corvette (110.7 inches vs. 106.7 inches).

Chassis Comparison

The M4’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The Corvette doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

Passenger Space Comparison

The M4 has standard seating for 4 passengers; the Corvette can only carry 2.

The M4 Coupe has 38 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Corvette (90 vs. 52).

The M4 Coupe has 1.9 inches more front headroom and 2.5 inches more front shoulder room than the Corvette Coupe.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the M4 easier. The M4’s trunk lift-over height is 26.2 inches, while the Corvette’s liftover is 41.2 inches.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the M4’s trunk can be opened just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Corvette doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its trunk, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics Comparison

If the front windows are left down on the M4 the driver can raise them using the key in the outside lock cylinder. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from outside the vehicle using the key in the outside lock cylinder or the keyless remote. The driver of the Corvette can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In case of a sudden change of weather, the M4 has a standard remote convertible top which can be raised from a distance to protect the interior of the vehicle from damage. The Corvette’s top can only be opened by remote, so the driver will have to run to the car, get in, turn the ignition on and raise the top to prevent the interior from being damaged.

The M4’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Corvette’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the M4 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Corvette doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The M4 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Corvette doesn’t offer headlight washers.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the M4 detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Corvette doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the M4 has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Corvette doesn’t offer cornering lights. The M4 also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the M4 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Corvette doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

The M4’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Corvette’s power mirror controls are on the dash, hidden behind the steering wheel, where they are awkward to manipulate.

On extremely cold Winter days, the M4’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Corvette doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The M4’s optional Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Corvette doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages Comparison

The M4 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The Intellichoice estimates that the M4 will retain 51.89% to 58.83% of its original price after five years, while the Corvette only retains 49.53% to 51.25%.
