The M2’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Cayman doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The M2 offers an optional Side and Top View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Cayman only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The M2 has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Cayman doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the M2 and the Cayman have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and available crash mitigating brakes.

The BMW M2 weighs 419 to 617 pounds more than the Porsche Cayman. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts. Lighter cars are also affected more by crosswinds.

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the M2 for 4 years and 50,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Porsche doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Cayman.

There are over 74 percent more BMW dealers than there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the M2’s warranty.

The M2’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Cayman’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the M2 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Cayman.

On a hot day the M2’s driver can lower all the windows using the key in the outside lock cylinder or from a distance with the keyless remote or the keyless remote. The driver of the Cayman can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

The M2’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Cayman’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The M2 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Cayman.
