Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Audi Q5 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Cherokee doesn’t offer pretensioners for the rear seat belts.

The Q5’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Cherokee doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Q5. But it costs extra on the Cherokee.

Both the Q5 and the Cherokee have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, available crash mitigating brakes, blind spot warning systems and rearview cameras.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Audi Q5 is safer than the Jeep Cherokee:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Q5 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2016, a rating granted to only 61 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Cherokee is not even a standard “Top Pick” for 2016.

Warranty Comparison

The Q5 comes with a full 4 year/50,000 mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24 hour roadside assistance. The Cherokee’s 3 year/36,000 mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 14,000 miles sooner.

The Q5’s corrosion warranty is 7 years and unlimited miles longer than the Cherokee’s (12/unlimited vs. 5/100,000).

Reliability Comparison

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without their vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports predicts that the Q5’s reliability will be 272% better than the Cherokee.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 16th in initial quality. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 29th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 14th in reliability, above the industry average. With 59 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 28th.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Q5 2.0T Hybrid Prestige gets better fuel mileage than the Cherokee 4 cyl. 4WD (24 city/30 hwy vs. 21 city/28 hwy). The Q5 2.0T Hybrid Prestige gets better fuel mileage than the Cherokee 4 cyl. FWD (24 city/30 hwy vs. 22 city/31 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the Q5 Hybrid Prestige’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Cherokee doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Q5 Hybrid’s standard fuel tank has 3.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cherokee (19 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Q5’s standard fuel tank has 3.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cherokee (19.8 vs. 15.9 gallons).

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Q5 has larger standard tires than the Cherokee (235/60R18 vs. 225/60R17). The Q5 3.0T/TDI/Hybrid’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Cherokee (255/45R20 vs. 245/65R17).

The Q5 2.0T’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Cherokee’s 65 series tires. The Q5 3.0T/TDI’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Cherokee Limited’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Q5 2.0T has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Cherokee. The Q5 3.0T/TDI’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels on the Cherokee Limited.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Q5 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Cherokee’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Q5 has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Cherokee doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Q5’s wheelbase is 4.2 inches longer than on the Cherokee (110.5 inches vs. 106.3 inches).

The Q5’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52.9% to 47.1%) than the Cherokee’s (57% to 43%). This gives the Q5 more stable handling and braking.

The Q5 2.0T Premium Plus handles at .86 G’s, while the Cherokee Limited 4x4 pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Q5 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the Cherokee Trailhawk 4x4 (26.9 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.6 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

The Q5 has .1 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom and 1.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Cherokee.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Q5 has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat up than the Cherokee with its rear seat up (29.1 vs. 24.6 cubic feet). The Q5 has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat folded than the Cherokee with its rear seat folded (57.3 vs. 54.9 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Q5 easier. The Q5’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.3 inches, while the Cherokee’s liftover is 30.9 inches.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Q5’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Cherokee’s standard power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully. Only its driver’s window opens automatically. With the Cherokee Latitude/Limited/Trailhawk’s power windows, only the front windows open or close automatically.

If the windows are left down on the Q5 the driver can raise them all using the key in the outside lock cylinder; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the Cherokee can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Q5’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Cherokee’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Q5 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Cherokee doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

Consumer Reports rated the Q5’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the Cherokee’s headlights, which were rated “Poor” to “Fair” (depending on model and options).

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Q5 3.0T/TDI has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Cherokee doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Q5 has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Cherokee has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the Latitude/Limited/Trailhawk.

The Q5’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Jeep charges extra for heated mirrors on the Cherokee.

When the Q5 with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Cherokee’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Q5 offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Cherokee offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Q5 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Cherokee and isn’t available on the Cherokee Sport.

The Q5’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Cherokee Sport doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

Economic Advantages Comparison

The Q5 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The Intellichoice estimates that the Q5 will retain 51.14% to 55.73% of its original price after five years, while the Cherokee only retains 44.69% to 48.22%.

Recommendations Comparison

Consumer Reports® recommends the Audi Q5, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Jeep Cherokee isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Q5 third among compact premium SUVs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Cherokee isn’t in the top three in its category.
