Both the GranTurismo and the S-Class Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.
The GranTurismo’s 4.7 DOHC V8 produces 5 more horsepower (454 vs. 449) than the S550 Coupe’s standard 4.7 turbo V8.
For better traction and acceleration, the GranTurismo has larger standard rear tires than the S-Class Coupe (285/35R20 vs. 275/40R19). The GranTurismo MC’s rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the S-Class Coupe (295/35R20 vs. 285/35R20).
The GranTurismo’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S-Class Coupe’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires. The GranTurismo’s tires are lower profile than the S-Class Coupe’s optional 40 series front tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranTurismo has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the S-Class Coupe.
For better maneuverability, the GranTurismo’s turning circle is 3.9 feet tighter than the S63 AMG Coupe 4MATIC’s (35.1 feet vs. 39 feet). The GranTurismo’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the S65 AMG Coupe’s (35.1 feet vs. 40.4 feet).
The Maserati GranTurismo may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 550 pounds less than the Mercedes S-Class Coupe.
The GranTurismo is 3.7 inches shorter than the S-Class Coupe, making the GranTurismo easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The GranTurismo has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The S-Class Coupe doesn’t offer headlight washers.
