Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front shoulder belts of the Cadillac SRX are height-adjustable, and the rear seat shoulder belts have child comfort guides to move the belt to properly fit children. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages children to buckle up. The Mercedes M-Class has only front height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the SRX and M-Class have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The SRX has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The M-Class’ child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The SRX has a standard Saab Active Head Restraint (SAHR), which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the SAHR system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The M-Class doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The SRX offers optional Rear Automatic Braking which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The M-Class doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To help make backing safer, the SRX’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The M-Class doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the SRX and the M-Class have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Cadillac SRX is safer than the Mercedes M-Class:

Warranty Comparison

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the SRX 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the M-Class. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the M-Class ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The SRX’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the M-Class’ (6/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

Cadillac pays for scheduled maintenance on the SRX for 4 years and 50,000 miles. Cadillac will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the M-Class.

There are almost 5 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the SRX’s warranty.

Engine Comparison

The SRX’s 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 6 more horsepower (308 vs. 302) than the ML350’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Cadillac SRX uses regular unleaded gasoline. The M-Class requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The Cadillac SRX’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Mercedes M-Class only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The SRX 4 handles at .84 G’s, while the M-Class 4MATIC pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The SRX 4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the ML350 4MATIC (27.2 seconds @ .63 average G’s vs. 27.8 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the SRX has a 1.76 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the M-Class (7 vs. 5.24 inches), allowing the SRX to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis Comparison

The Cadillac SRX may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 400 pounds less than the Mercedes M-Class.

The SRX uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The M-Class doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space Comparison

The SRX has .8 inches more front headroom and .9 inches more front legroom than the M-Class.

Ergonomics Comparison

The SRX offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The M-Class doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The SRX’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The M-Class does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the SRX has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the M-Class only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Consumer Reports rated the SRX’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the M-Class’ headlights, which were rated “Poor.”

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the SRX owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the SRX will cost $1120 less than the M-Class over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the SRX is less expensive to operate than the M-Class because it costs $1476 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the SRX than the M-Class, including $228 less for a water pump, $69 less for front brake pads, $509 less for a starter, $377 less for fuel injection, $135 less for a fuel pump, $1263 less for front struts, $821 less for a timing belt/chain and $398 less for a power steering pump.

Intellichoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Cadillac SRX will be $14070 to $15319 less than for the Mercedes M-Class.

Recommendations Comparison

The SRX was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Five Trucks” for 3 of the last 11 years. The M-Class has never been a Car and Driver “Top Five Truck” pick.

The Cadillac SRX outsold the Mercedes M-Class by 32% during the 2014 model year.
