Safety Comparison

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the X6 M helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The X6 M’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The X6 M offers an optional Side and Top View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Grand Cherokee SRT only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the X6 M and the Grand Cherokee SRT have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

Warranty Comparison

The X6 M comes with a full 4 year/50,000 mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24 hour roadside assistance. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s 3 year/36,000 mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 14,000 miles sooner.

The X6 M’s corrosion warranty is 7 years and unlimited miles longer than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s (12/unlimited vs. 5/100,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X6 M for 4 years and 50,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Jeep doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Grand Cherokee SRT.

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the X6 M has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the engine in the Grand Cherokee SRT.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2014 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 38 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 31st, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 18th in reliability, above the industry average. With 51 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 28th.

Engine Comparison

The X6 M’s 4.4 turbo V8 produces 92 more horsepower (567 vs. 475) and 83 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 470) than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s 6.4 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the X6 M gets better fuel mileage than the Grand Cherokee SRT (14 city/19 hwy vs. 13 city/19 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the X6 M’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the X6 M’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

For better stopping power the X6 M’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Grand Cherokee SRT:

The X6 M’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Grand Cherokee SRT are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction and acceleration, the X6 M has larger rear tires than the Grand Cherokee SRT (325/30R21 vs. 295/45R20).

The X6 M’s 285/40R21 front and 325/30R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the X6 M has standard 21-inch wheels. Only 20-inch wheels are available on the Grand Cherokee SRT.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The rear suspension of the X6 M uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Grand Cherokee SRT, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The X6 M offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jeep doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Grand Cherokee SRT.

The X6 M has a standard automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The X6 M has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the X6 M is 1.9 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than on the Grand Cherokee SRT.

The X6 M’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51.6% to 48.4%) than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s (54% to 46%). This gives the X6 M more stable handling and braking.

Chassis Comparison

The design of the BMW X6 M amounts to more than styling. The X6 M has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .37 Cd. That is lower than the Grand Cherokee SRT (.39). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the X6 M get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space Comparison

The X6 M has 2.8 inches more front shoulder room and 1.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Grand Cherokee SRT.

Ergonomics Comparison

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Grand Cherokee SRT, the X6 M has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The X6 M offers an optional heads-up display which projects speed and navigation instruction readouts onto the windshield, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The X6 M’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the X6 M to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

Standard BMW Apps for the X6 M allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, tagging songs to buy them later, following twitter accounts and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

The X6 M’s optional Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
