Safety Comparison

The Panamera offers an optional Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The A7 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Panamera and the A7 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

Reliability Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Panamera third among large premium cars in their 2013 Initial Quality Study. The A7 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2013 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche first in initial quality, above the industry average. With 28 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 13th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2013 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche second in reliability, above the industry average. With 53 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 23rd.

Engine Comparison

The Panamera S E-Hybrid’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6 hybrid produces 106 more horsepower (416 vs. 310) and 110 lbs.-ft. more torque (435 vs. 325) than the A7’s 3.0 supercharged V6. The Panamera S’ standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 110 more horsepower (420 vs. 310) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (384 vs. 325) than the A7’s 3.0 supercharged V6. The Panamera GTS’ standard 4.8 DOHC V8 produces 130 more horsepower (440 vs. 310) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (384 vs. 325) than the A7’s 3.0 supercharged V6. The Panamera Turbo’s standard 4.8 turbo V8 produces 210 more horsepower (520 vs. 310) and 191 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 325) than the A7’s 3.0 supercharged V6.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

The Panamera S E-Hybrid can drive on battery power alone for up to 22 miles. The A7 must run its internal combustion engine to move.

Regenerative brakes improve the Panamera’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The A7 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Panamera Hybrid/V6/S RWD’s standard fuel tank has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the A7 TDI’s standard fuel tank (21.1 vs. 19.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Panamera S4/GTS/Turbo’s standard fuel tank has 6.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the A7 3.0T’s standard fuel tank (26.4 vs. 19.8 gallons).

The Panamera offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The A7 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction and acceleration, the Panamera has larger standard rear tires than the A7 (275/45R18 vs. 255/40R19). The Panamera’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the A7 (295/35R20 vs. 265/35R20).

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Panamera offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Audi doesn’t offer an active suspension on the A7.

The Panamera offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The A7’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Panamera has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Panamera’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The A7 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Panamera’s wheelbase is .3 inches longer than on the A7 (115 inches vs. 114.7 inches). The Panamera Executive’s wheelbase is 6.2 inches longer than on the A7 (120.9 feet vs. 114.7 inches).

The Panamera Turbo 4 handles at 1.00 G’s, while the A7 pulls only .91 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Panamera goes through Road & Track’s slalom 4.5 MPH faster than the A7 (71.2 vs. 66.7 MPH).

The Panamera Turbo 4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the A7 (24.4 seconds @ .81 average G’s vs. 25.8 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

Chassis Comparison

The Porsche Panamera may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 300 pounds less than the Audi A7.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Panamera Turbo 4 is quieter than the A7 (71 vs. 72 dB).

Passenger Space Comparison

The Panamera has 4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the A7 (98 vs. 94).

The Panamera has 1.1 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom and 1.6 inches more rear headroom than the A7.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Panamera’s available rear seats recline. The A7’s rear seats don’t recline.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Panamera offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The A7 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the A7, the Panamera offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Panamera’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the A7.

The Panamera’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The A7 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Panamera offers an optional rear wiper. The A7 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Panamera detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The A7 doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the Panamera to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The A7 doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

To help keep rear passengers entertained, the Panamera offers optional rear seat controls for the radio which can play a separate audio source. The A7 doesn’t offer rear seat audio controls.

Optional Online Services for the Panamera allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including playing internet radio stations, finding fuel prices at nearby service stations, searching the internet and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The A7 doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

The Panamera offers an optional 115 volt a/c outlet in the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters which can break or get misplaced. The A7 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Economic Advantages Comparison

The Panamera will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The Intellichoice estimates that the Panamera will retain 45.33% to 51.12% of its original price after five years, while the A7 only retains 42.95%.
