The SL-Class’ front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The XK doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The SL-Class has standard four wheel antilock disc brakes for quicker stops and controlled steering ability, especially under poor traction conditions. Antilock brakes cost extra on the Jaguar XK.

The SL-Class offers an optional PRE-SAFE Brake, which uses forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The XK offers an available collision warning system without the automated brake feature which would prevent or reduce the collision if the driver fails to react.

The SL-Class’ optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The XK doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The SL-Class’ optional blind spot warning system uses digital cameras monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. The XK doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

The SL-Class’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The XK doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The SL-Class has standard mbrace, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The XK doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the SL-Class and the XK have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

J.D. Power ranks Mercedes fifth in reliability, above the industry average. With 49 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 27th.

The XK doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The SL-Class has 3.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the XK (19.8 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The SL-Class offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The XK doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the SL-Class is 1.9 inches wider in the front and .1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the XK.

The SL65 AMG handles at .96 G’s, while the XK Convertible pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The SL-Class is 7.1 inches shorter than the XK, making the SL-Class easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Mercedes SL-Class amounts to more than styling. The SL-Class offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .29 to .31 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the XK (.33 to .35) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the SL-Class get better fuel mileage.

The SL-Class’ standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The XK doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the SL63 AMG is quieter than the XKR-S Convertible:

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults or children, the SL-Class has a standard power rear trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The XK doesn’t offer a power trunk.

The SL-Class’ front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XK’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

In case of a sudden change of weather, the SL-Class has a standard remote convertible top which can be raised from a distance to protect the interior of the vehicle from damage. The XK doesn’t offer a remote top, so the driver will have to run to the car, get in, turn the ignition on and raise the top to prevent the interior from being damaged.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the SL-Class detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The XK doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the SL-Class has standard extendable sun visors. The XK doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The SL-Class’ standard separate stalk mounted cruise control on/off switch is conveniently located with the rest of the cruise controls. The XK’s standard cruise control must be turned on with a hard to find switch on the dashboard.

Optional Mercedes-Benz Apps for the SL-Class allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, finding fuel prices at nearby service stations, searching the internet and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The XK doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

The SL-Class’ standard GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that offers alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service available in a limited number of metro areas.) The XK’s navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

With standard voice command, the SL-Class offers the driver hands free control of the radio, cell phone and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The XK doesn’t offer a voice control system.

The SL-Class’ Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The XK doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the SL-Class first among midsize premium sporty cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XK isn’t in the top three.

The Mercedes SL-Class outsold the Jaguar XK by over five to one during the 2013 model year.
