Safety Comparison

The A6’s front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Panamera doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The A6 has a standard Audi Backguard System, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Audi Backguard System moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Panamera doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

An active infrared night vision system optional on the A6 Prestige helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera and near-infrared lights to detect heat, the system then projects the image on the windshield, near the driver’s line of sight. The Panamera doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the A6 and the Panamera have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

For its top level performance in frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the A6 as a “Top Pick,” a rating only granted to 170 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Panamera has not been tested, yet.

Warranty Comparison

The A6’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Panamera’s (12 vs. 10 years).

There are over 30 percent more Audi dealers than there are Porsche dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the A6’s warranty.

The A6 Prestige’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Panamera’s optional 40 series front tires.

The A6 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Panamera, it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The A6 3.0T Quattro handles at .93 G’s, while the Panamera Turbo 4 pulls only .92 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

Chassis Comparison

The design of the Audi A6 amounts to more than styling. The A6 offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .26 to .28 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the Panamera (.29 to .3) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the A6 get better fuel mileage.

If the windows are left down on the A6 the driver can raise them all using the key in the outside lock cylinder; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the Panamera can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the A6 has standard extendable sun visors. The Panamera doesn’t offer extendable visors.
