On the EPA test cycle the Boxster Auto with its standard 6 cyl. gets better fuel mileage than the SLK350 (22 city/32 hwy vs. 21 city/29 hwy). The Boxster S Auto gets better fuel mileage than the SLK350 (21 city/30 hwy vs. 21 city/29 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the Boxster’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The SLK-Class doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Regardless of its engine, the Boxster’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) Mercedes only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the SLK-Class 350/55 AMG.

The Boxster’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the SLK250 are solid, not vented.

The Boxster offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The SLK-Class doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.
