The 650i offers all wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The XK doesn’t offer all wheel drive.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the 6 Series helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The XK doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The 6 Series’ optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The XK doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The 6 Series offers an optional Side and Top View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The XK only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The 6 Series’ optional blind spot warning system uses digital cameras monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The XK doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

Compared to metal, the 6 Series’ plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Jaguar XK has a metal gas tank.

The 6 Series has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The XK doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the 6 Series and the XK have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

The 6 Series’ corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the XK’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 6 Series’ warranty.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the 6 Series has a standard 210 amp alternator. The XK’s 130 amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the 6 Series is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures which can degrade battery life. By keeping the 6 Series’ battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The XK’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 6 Series second among premium sporty cars in their 2012 Initial Quality Study. The XK isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2012 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 20th in reliability. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 27th.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the 6 Series 640i/M6’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The XK doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The 6 Series’ standard fuel tank has 2.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the XK (18.5 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The 6 Series M6’s standard fuel tank has 5 gallons more fuel capacity than the XK (21.1 vs. 16.1 gallons).

The 6 Series has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XK’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The 6 Series offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jaguar doesn’t offer an active suspension on the XK.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 6 Series Coupe’s wheelbase is 3.9 inches longer than on the XK (112.2 inches vs. 108.3 inches). The 6 Series Convertible’s wheelbase is 4.1 inches longer than on the XK (112.4 feet vs. 108.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the 6 Series is 1.9 inches wider in the front and 1.8 inches wider in the rear than the track on the XK.

The 650i Coupe handles at .94 G’s, while the XK Coupe pulls only .89 G’s of cornering force in a Road & Track skidpad test.

The M6 Convertible handles at .92 G’s, while the XK Convertible pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The 6 Series offers an optional heads-up display which projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts onto the windshield, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XK doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The 6 Series’ standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them. Jaguar does not offer a locking feature on the XK’s standard power windows.

The 6 Series’ front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XK’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

In case of a sudden change of weather, the 6 Series has a standard remote convertible top which can be raised from a distance to protect the interior of the vehicle from damage. The XK doesn’t offer a remote top, so the driver will have to run to the car, get in, turn the ignition on and raise the top to prevent the interior from being damaged.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the 6 Series to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The XK doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the 6 Series detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The XK doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the 6 Series Coupe to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XK doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

The 6 Series has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable. The XK doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

The 6 Series’ standard steering wheel mounted cruise control on/off switch is conveniently located with the rest of the cruise controls. The XK’s standard cruise control must be turned on with a hard to find switch on the dashboard.

Optional BMW Apps for the 6 Series allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, tagging songs to buy them later, following twitter accounts and other online activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The XK doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

The 6 Series’ standard GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that offers alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service available in a limited number of metro areas.) The XK’s navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

With standard voice command, the 6 Series offers the driver hands free control of the radio, cell phone and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The XK doesn’t offer a voice control system.

The 6 Series’ optional Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The XK doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Insurance will cost less for the 6 Series owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the 6 Series will cost $325 less than the XK over a five-year period.

The 6 Series will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The Intellichoice estimates that the 6 Series will retain 41.35% to 43.35% of its original price after five years, while the XK only retains 36.21% to 39.47%.

Intellichoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the BMW 6 Series will be $13024 to $38482 less than for the Jaguar XK.
