The Range Rover Sport Supercharged offers optional Collision Mitigation by Braking, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Cayenne offers an available collision warning system without the automated brake feature which would prevent or reduce the collision if the driver fails to react.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional Surround Camera System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Cayenne only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Cayenne have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

The Range Rover Sport weighs 602 to 1418 pounds more than the Porsche Cayenne. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The camshafts in the Range Rover Sport’s engine are driven by a hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs. The Cayenne 3.6 DOHC V6, Cayenne Hybrid 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid’s camshafts are driven by a rubber belt that needs periodic replacement. If the Cayenne’s cam drive belt breaks the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

For better traction, the Range Rover Sport’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Cayenne (275/40R20 vs. 265/50R19).

The Range Rover Sport HSE’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Cayenne’s standard 55 series tires. The Range Rover Sport’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Cayenne’s optional 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport HSE has standard 19 inch wheels. Smaller 18 inch wheels are standard on the Cayenne.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so your trip isn’t interrupted by a flat. A full size spare isn’t available on the Cayenne, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Cayenne, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Sport’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the Cayenne’s (37.8 feet vs. 39.1 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Cayenne (8.9 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Cayenne.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Sport to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Cayenne doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

When the Range Rover Sport is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Cayenne’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.
