For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Audi Q5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X5 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Q5’s optional blind spot warning system uses rear-aimed sensors monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The X5 doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver's blind spots.

Both the Q5 and the X5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Audi Q5 is safer than the X5:

For better maneuverability, the Q5’s turning circle is 3.9 feet tighter than the X5’s (38.1 feet vs. 42 feet).

The Audi Q5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 800 to 1150 pounds less than the BMW X5.

The Q5 is 8.9 inches shorter than the X5, making the Q5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Audi Q5 amounts to more than styling. The Q5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .33 Cd. That is lower than the X5 (.34 to .35) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Q5 get better fuel mileage.

The Q5 has a much larger cargo area than the X5 5-Passenger with its rear seat up (29.1 vs. 21.9 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Q5 easier. The Q5’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.3 inches, while the X5’s liftover is 30 inches.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Q5. The X5 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Q5’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X5’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.
