For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the BMW 6 Series are height adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar XK Convertible doesn’t offer height adjustable seat belts.

The BMW 6 Series has Daytime Running Lights to help keep it more visible under all conditions. Canadian government studies show that driving with lights during the day reduces accidents by 11% by making vehicles more conspicuous. The XK doesn’t offer Daytime Running Lights.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the 6 Series helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The XK doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The 6 Series’ optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The XK doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

Compared to metal, the 6 Series’ plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Jaguar XK has a metal gas tank.

The 6 Series has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The XK doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies.

Both the 6 Series and the XK have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

The 6 Series’ corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the XK’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the 6 Series for 3 years and 38000 miles longer than Jaguar pays for maintenance for the XK (4/50,000 vs. 1/12000).

There are over 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier to get service under the 6 Series’ warranty.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the 6 Series has a standard 170 amp alternator. The XK’s 130 amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the 6 Series is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures which can degrade battery life. By keeping the 6 Series’ battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The XK’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

J.D. Power and Associates’ surveys of the owners of three-year-old cars provide the long-term dependability statistics which show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 7th in reliability, above the industry average. With 15 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 10th.

The 6 Series has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XK’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The 6 Series offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jaguar doesn’t offer an active suspension on the XK.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 6 Series’ wheelbase is 1.1 inches longer than on the XK (109.4 inches vs. 108.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the 6 Series is 2.3 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the XK.

The 650i Coupe handles at .94 G’s, while the XKR Coupe pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The 6 Series Convertible handles at .91 G’s, while the XK Convertible pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The 650i Coupe goes through Motor Trend’s slalom 2.3 MPH faster than the XKR Coupe (67.8 vs. 65.5 MPH).

The design of the BMW 6 Series amounts to more than styling. The 6 Series offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .3 to .34 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the XK (.345 to .36). A more efficient exterior helps the 6 Series go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the 6 Series get better fuel mileage.

The 6 Series offers an optional heads-up display which projects speed and navigation instruction readouts onto the windshield, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XK doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The 6 Series’ front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XK’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the windows are left down on the 6 Series the driver can raise them all using the key in the outside lock cylinder. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from outside the vehicle using the key in the outside lock cylinder or the keyless remote. The driver of the XK can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the 6 Series to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The XK doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

When the 6 Series is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The XK’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

The 6 Series’ standard separate stalk mounted cruise control on/off switch is conveniently located with the rest of the cruise controls. The XK’s cruise control must be turned on with a hard to find switch on the dashboard.

The 6 Series’ standard GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that offers alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service available in a limited number of metro areas.) The XK’s navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

With standard voice command, the 6 Series offers the driver hands free control of the radio, climate controls and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The XK doesn’t offer a voice control system.
