For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Jaguar XK Coupe are height adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Mercedes CLK doesn’t offer height adjustable seat belts.

Both the XK and the CLK have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

For better traction, the XK has larger standard tires than the CLK (F:245/45R18 & R:255/45R18 vs. F:225/45R17 & R:245/40R17). The XK’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the CLK (F:255/35R20 & R:285/30R20 vs. F:225/40R18 & R:255/35R18).

The XK’s optional 255/35R20 front and 285/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) which provides a stiffer sidewall than the CLK63’s 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XK has standard 18 inch wheels. Smaller 17 inch wheels are standard on the CLK. The XK’s optional 20 inch wheels are larger than the 18 inch wheels on the CLK63.

The XK has a standard continuously variable suspension system. Using sensors on steering angle, speed and other driver inputs, the shocks soften to improve ride, or stiffen when appropriate to aid handling on tricky roads. The CLK’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XK is 2.5 inches wider in the front and 4.9 inches wider in the rear than on the CLK.

The XKR Coupe handles at .89 G’s, while the CLK63 Coupe pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The XK Convertible handles at .87 G’s, while the CLK63 Cabriolet pulls only .86 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The XK Coupe goes through Road & Track’s slalom 1 MPH faster than the CLK550 Coupe (67.5 vs. 66.5 MPH).

For better maneuverability, the XK’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the CLK’s (33.3 feet vs. 35.3 feet).

The XK’s standard power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The CLK’s standard power mirror controls are on the dash, hidden behind the steering wheel, where they are awkward to manipulate.

Wireless connectivity is standard on the XK, connecting the driver and passenger’s cell phones to the vehicle systems. This allows them to use the vehicle’s stereo and hand controls to place calls safely and easily. Mercedes doesn’t offer wireless connectivity on the CLK.
